Overview
The University of Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Hale 'Olelo building located at the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Hilo campus on Nowelo Street just below the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, is a two-story, 36,000-square-foot complex. The complex features a performing arts auditorium, classrooms, library, media resource room, computer lab, meeting rooms and offices The complex was built as a state-of-the-art dedicated facility to the Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language's programs and operations, to further expand and perpetuate the Hawaiian language and culture, and serve as a an important example for other indigenous language efforts around the world.
The building earned the LEED Silver rating by incorporating numerous sustainable design elements in the facility. This includes sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy efficiency, and materials and resources strategies such as managing stormwater quality and quantity on the building site, incorporating low-flow fixtures and faucets, installing a photovoltaic array, and more.
