Creative Media Facility – LEED Silver

Overview

The Creative Media Facility is situated within the ahupuaʻa of Honouliuli, at the northeast edge of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ West Oʻahu campus. The site was selected for its unique adjacency to future planned development, including the new rail transit station and park and ride facility.

The Creative Media Facility at UH-West Oʻahu was developed to provide students with hands-on experiences and learning opportunities and to prepare them for careers in creative economy such as video game design and development, interactive design, motion and visual graphics, film, and television production and new media. The building contains multiple rooms with state-of-the-art technology and audio-visual equipment to support a curriculum and student advancement around creative media.

The Creative Media Facility has been awarded the LEED Silver rating for implementing sustainable strategies including: use of bioretention basins to treat stormwater runoff, installation of low-flow plumbing fixtures and indoor water metering, enhanced refrigerant management, diversion of construction waste to landfills or incineration facilities, and the use of materials with recycled content.

Upon completion, the project achieved energy cost savings through various energy efficiency measures such as: wall and roof insulation that exceeds the ASHRAE minimum requirements, high performance glazing, exterior shading, all LED lighting, occupancy sensors in all classroom and office spaces, a high efficiency water-cooled centrifugal chiller, and airflow reset during unoccupied hours. Along with energy use reduction, the project also employs a renewable energy strategy. The rooftop area has a 100 kW PV (photovoltaic) system.
