The Department of Second Language Studies has a number of scholarship funds that support student research and conference travel. Descriptions of these funds, their purposes, and application procedures and materials can be found at the following links.

General Resources

  • Includes both open and university-specific funding opportunities, but will require you to establish search parameters

  • Emphasizes most of the big grants available (NSF, NIH, etc.), but has a few less well-known opportunities as well

  • One general application can be sent to multiple organizations, and will filter based on your eligibility for scholarships

Research Grants & Fellowships

  • Emphasizes quantitative analysis of data from large scale data sets
  • Award includes a $25,000 stipend for research, and travel and lodging for annual AERA Research Conference
  • See link for annual deadline

  • Awards five $5,000 grants to support dissertation research on second and foreign language learning with technology
  • Deadline is at the end of May

  • Awards five $1,000 grants to support MA thesis research on second and foreign language learning with technology
  • Deadline is at the end of May

  • Awards up to 10 grants worth $2,000 each year

  • Awards up to $5,000 for graduate projects
  • Emphasis on young learners in English as a foreign language contexts
  • Deadline in April

  • Graduate students in any major as long as they intend to teach
  • Annual awards of up to $5,000
  • Deadline in January

  • Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula (projects based in Western Europe not accepted)
  • Funds projects abroad for between 6-12 months
  • Must apply through institution

  • Awards up to $5,000 for dissertation research
  • Deadline is in May

  • Awards up to 20 grants worth $2,000 each year
  • Check September issue of journal for application guidelines

  • Stipend of $35,000 for research costs up to $3,000 and for university fees up to $5,000
  • Deadline is late October and notification in late March

  • Supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general
  • Not for research into developing tools for assessing and teaching languages
  • January and July deadlines

  • Supports graduate students in the fields of applied linguistics and language education at the dissertation writing stage
  • Up to $2,500
  • February 1st of each year, notification: March 7th of each year

  • Supports graduate students in the fields of applied linguistics and language education at the dissertation writing stage
  • Specifically for research on Less Commonly Taught Languages (must be a member of National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages)
  • Award is for $2,500
  • Deadline generally early February, notification in early March

  • To support graduate students conduct ESOL research with direct application to classroom practice
  • One award for $1,500 + conference registration waiver (for year of presentation)
  • Deadline early October

  • For research conducted in accordance with TESOL’s research agenda
  • Up to $2500
  • Deadline mid-July
  • TESOL Research Mini-grant proposals are usually due the first week of July.

Travel Grants

  • Offer a variable number of awards annual for graduate students presenting a single authored paper or poster (eligible graduate students will be notified)
  • Must be a member of AAAL

  • To support graduate students in attending and presenting at annual LTRC Conference
  • Up to $750 + 1 year membership in ILTA; number varies by year
  • Deadline generally early December – early January

  • Maximum of 10 awards per year for $1,000 each

  • To assist in graduate student attendance to the annual TESOL International Convention
  • Offer 4 $500 awards annually + waived conference fee (2 PhD, 2 MA)
  • Must be a member of TESOL
