“ʻ?ina is an ancestor and teacher in Hawaiian culture. We learn science, relationships, economy, boundaries, spirituality, etc. through the knowledge of ʻ¨¡ina. The act of visiting and seeing different ʻ¨¡ina expands our knowledge base by exposing us to new experiences, understandings, and roles. In that new land, you become a visitor with different kuleana. It essentially compels us to expand the boundaries of what we know simply by virtue of these new experiences and learn empathy along the way.”

Uʻilani Keliʻikuli, Associate Professor of Hawaiian Studies,
