Please accept these two editions of Â鶹´«Ã½'s First Regional History: Historic Waiʻanae - A Place of Kings (as both an E-book and as an Audiobook), for access by all faculty and support staff under the university's umbrella as a Free Gift from myself and my hanai cousin, Adrian Silva. Adrian is a sixth-generation resident of the Waiʻanae Coast and CEO of the nonprofit foundation Hui Huliau, a Native Hawaiian Organization.
Adrian is the great-great-great grandson of Link McCandless, who came to Â鶹´«Ã½ with his brothers in 1882, drilling artesian wells for the king, and then becoming a successful cattle rancher on the Waiʻanae Coast, with his ranch headquarters being located in Mākua valley.
It was after I came to HawaiʻÊ»i in 1968 as a young teacher and was hanai'd into the family of my Uncle Jay Landis, which brought Adrian and I to become cousins and close friends.
It was during this time that, as a 4th-grade teacher at Waiʻanae Elementary, I wrote the book Historic Waiʻanae with Bob Krauss and, through the help of my Uncle Jay, I was introduced to then-Governor John Burns, who became a friend and through his efforts, provided seed money to make Historic Waiʻanae possible.
Fast forward 50 years and I am now happy to gift with Adrian Historic Waiʻanae - A Place of Kings to those faculty and support staff under the Â鶹´«Ã½umbrella in both editions. It may be of interest that the narrated edition of Historic Waiʻanae has been narrated by three members of the Waiʻanae community, each of Hawaiian blood.
