This presentation will go over how health insurance works in the U.S. By the end, you will have a better understanding of the general levels and costs of health insurance plans especially for international students, how healthcare providers interact with insurance companies within the U.S. healthcare system, and why it is important to understand fully and choose a plan that covers all your needs.

You will also be provided information about a health insurance option. This may help those who are still looking for an insurance plan or may be considering switching their current plans.

International Student Services (ISS), Office of Global Engagement, has collaborated with GeoBlue to offer an alternative student health insurance coverage for Âé¶¹´«Ã½M¨¡noa international students for the current academic year (Fall 2024 - Summer 2025). The Geoblue plan is offered at a low cost and provides great health benefits with access to the best network of providers in the state of Hawai?i. The GeoBlue student health insurance coverage includes medical, prescription drug, mental health and nervous disorders, and pre-existing conditions coverage, along with laboratory, medical evacuation, repatriation, and accidental death and dismemberment benefits. Please note that dependents are not eligible to enroll in the GeoBlue student health insurance plan offered. However, GeoBlue provides access to several voluntary enrollment options, including the XPLORER Long Term Expatriate plan, our recommended choice for dependents of University of Hawai?i, M¨¡noa students.
GeoBlue offers access to an elite network of providers (Blue Cross/Blue Shield), the same network as the state sponsored HMSA plan, at a lower cost. It also includes access to innovative mobile and online tools, the convenience of telemedicine tools, and exceptional customer service.
