Abundance from Abroad: International Migration and the Developing World

Join us for the 2026 Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Lecture featuring Dean Yang on "Abundance from Abroad: International Migration and the Developing World." Dean Yang is a Professor in the Department of Economics and the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. His current research focuses on international migration, health policy, microfinance and disasters. Other past and current topics of interest include international trade, corruption and political economy. Much of his work involves randomized controlled trials in field settings, while other work involves analysis of novel data sources. He has conducted survey work and field experiments among Filipino migrant workers and their families and on HIV/AIDS interventions in central Mozambique. Past and current field research locations include El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, the Philippines, as well as migrant populations of Filipinos in Italy, Indians in Qatar, and Salvadorans and Kenyans in the US. He teaches courses in development economics and microeconomics at the undergraduate, master, and PhD levels. A native of the Philippines, he received his undergraduate and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University. The Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Lecture Series was established in honor of Seiji Naya, who was professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Economics in the Âé¶¹´«Ã½²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹ College of Social Sciences. He served as chief economist of the Asian Development Bank, program director at the East-West Center, and Director of the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism. Professor Naya was widely recognized for his contributions to understanding development issues in Southeast Asia.
