DCR, LCO are also looking to recruit students to work in a paid internship through the Hele Imua program run by the Hawaii DLIR (Hele Imua – State of Hawaii Internship Program – Workforce Development Division)

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (“DCR”), Litigation Coordination Office (“LCO”), is looking to host interns or offer externships for program specialists.

The Litigation Coordination Office works with many other offices within the DCR in support of litigation coordination. This involves a need for various expertise in the fields of sentence computation, Hawaii Uniform Information Practices act, victim and restitution work, statistician, administrative proceedings (grievances under collective bargaining and inmate tort claims), human resources, Prison Rape Elimination Act (“PREA”), and litigation.

An average day for a program specialist could involve:

- Drafting a response to an inquiry about correctional programs pursuant to Hawaii’s version of the Freedom of Information Act that involves statistical analysis data.

- Providing document review and discovery support in litigation involving the DCR.

- Responding to PREA allegations and investigations.

- Reviewing claims of lost property by an inmate.

- Providing arbitrationlitigation support involving complaints under the collective bargaining agreement.

- Responding to members of the public or victims of a crime as it relates to specific matters.

- Coordinating with internal stakeholders and DCR facilities to support the needs of the DCR.

You would work under the LCO to support the LCO and related DCR offices to protect members of the community by helping to manage secure institutions to detain individuals ordered into our custody and care. The nature of this work offers interested individuals with the opportunity to explore the diverse range of job opportunities offered by the DCR.
