"Processing of Microplastic Pollution by Invasive Species at Ecological Junctions" - Speaker: Dr. Justin Walguarnery, Instructor 3, School of Life Sciences, 鶹ýԴDz * Abstract: Microplastics, particles of plastic waste smaller than 5 mm, are now recognized as ubiquitous across ecosystems and environments. Current frontiers in the research of microplastic pollution focus on discerning effects and distribution patterns. While publications on the subject have increased exponentially, there remain basic questions concerning how this recently recognized component of global change can best be investigated to draw general conclusions. Research described here considers biotic components of ecosystems as important hubs in the processing and transfer of microplastics and shows how introduced species could act as keystones in both ecosystem and human health in a biosphere increasing infiltrated by plastics.
