ORE Seminar: Coming Together for Hawai‘i's Ocean Technology Ecosyste
November 7, 1:00pm - 2:00pmMānoa Campus, Holmes Hall 243
Over the past months, Hawai‘i Technology Development Corporation (HTDC) has been uniting over 120 organizations to co-design a shared vision for Hawai‘i's tech and innovation future. While initial findings show a foundation, ocean scientists and technologists expertise is vital to reimagine systems, strategies, and structures. This seminar will highlight efforts from both the State of Hawai‘i, non-governmental organizations, and private companies to come together for a shared vision of Hawaii's ocean technology ecosystem and invite the audience to engage. This seminar will highlight one of the shared efforts and frame how a shared vision can look through real world applications here in Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i Ocean Power Solutions (HOPS) is a Hawai‘i-based marine energy developer working to accelerate the commercialization of wave energy through integration with existing blue economy activities. HOPS primary product, the Hālona Wave Energy Converter (WEC), is an oscillating water column type WEC that was developed to address ocean observing power needs. HOPS is partnered with the University of Hawaiʻi to assess the economic feasibility of integrating wave energy into offshore aquaculture. We will be reviewing our efforts with Blue Ocean Mariculture, located in Kailua-Kona, to address the power needs of their operation. This seminar will present a vision of what HOPS is trying to do, lay out the roadmap ahead for a WEC-integrated blue economy of Hawai‘i, and highlight the importance of coalition building through community engagement.
