  {"id":2494,"date":"2023-09-21T20:35:59","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T20:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/?page_id=2494"},"modified":"2024-02-18T19:23:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-18T19:23:24","slug":"debra-hiers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/debra-hiers\/","title":{"rendered":"Debra Hiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Poems<\/h1>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Ghost-Jangling Dreams<\/h2>\n<p>ghost-jangling dreams<br \/>\nrumble through my sleep<br \/>\nlike quiet thunder, nudging me awake \u2014<\/p>\n<p>if only for a moment<br \/>\nI am aware of this:<\/p>\n<p>there is a corpse<br \/>\nlying in my own bed<br \/>\nright there beside me<br \/>\nmouth gaping open,<br \/>\nodorous flies escape parted lips\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the sun has not yet risen<br \/>\nthe moon I cannot see<br \/>\nthe children are looking in at me<br \/>\nthrough the window<\/p>\n<p>is she alive?<br \/>\nis she dead?<br \/>\nis she naked in her bed?<br \/>\ngiggling, giggling, giggling<br \/>\nlet\u2019s go, this is boring\u2014<br \/>\nthey, too disappear<\/p>\n<p>I roll over,<br \/>\ncurl up like a doodlebug,<br \/>\nslowly relax and close my eyes<br \/>\nreturn to sleep\u2014<br \/>\nsurely this will hold off<br \/>\nthe debt collectors<\/p>\n<p>my grandmother sits high on her perch<br \/>\nhumming and cooking at her stove<br \/>\nplanting her broccoli seed in the garden<br \/>\nsewing and mending my clothes to wear<br \/>\nsoon enough, but not yet, she says<br \/>\nto the corpse lying in my bed<\/p>\n<p>the sun shines its morning light<br \/>\ninto the small room I sleep in<br \/>\nand I am awake\u2014really <em>awake<br \/>\n<\/em>poem-saliva chattering my teeth<\/p>\n<p>the corpse has instructed me<br \/>\nto write it all down<br \/>\nleaving nothing out\u2014<br \/>\neven the silent spaces<br \/>\nbetween the words<br \/>\nmatter<\/p>\n<h2>Summer Solstice, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>on this short night<br \/>\nJune moonflowers bloom<br \/>\na caterpillar inches along<br \/>\nshelters under a green leaf<br \/>\nbass camp booms<br \/>\nrainwater sky<br \/>\npuddles form<br \/>\nfrogs speak up<br \/>\nwatermelon circles<br \/>\nsticky chin and sweet lips<br \/>\nsocks look for mates<br \/>\nshoes scattered about<br \/>\nmy bare feet untethered<br \/>\nwe celebrate all of this, this long day<br \/>\nlaughter echoes, joy abounds<br \/>\nour pride is our human dignity<br \/>\nelongated love beams whisper in the wind<br \/>\na centuries-old mantra<br \/>\n<em>may all beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness \u2026 <\/em><em><br \/>\nmay we be free from suffering and the root of suffering \u2026 <\/em><em><br \/>\nmay we not be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering \u2026<br \/>\n<\/em><em>may we be dwell in the great equanimity, free from passion, aggression and prejudice \u2026<br \/>\n<\/em>repeat often<\/p>\n<h2>Spring Rhapsody<\/h2>\n<p>Surprise me with your colors\u2014<br \/>\nbrilliant and bold,<br \/>\nsubdued and mysterious<\/p>\n<p>Sing me into ecstasy with your jazzy display<br \/>\nof sound, airborne undercurrents<br \/>\nand sky whistles<\/p>\n<p>Surprise me with your rain<br \/>\nthat nourishes the ground<br \/>\nthat holds each tiny seedling<br \/>\nuntil ready to burst its cover,<br \/>\nthe ground that has held each bulb<br \/>\ndormant through winter months<br \/>\nawaiting your season of return<\/p>\n<p>Surprise me with your morning light<br \/>\nthat calibrates this journey<br \/>\nof wakefuness<\/p>\n<p>So that now,<br \/>\nwe, too, can follow your lead<br \/>\nsurprising each other<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DebHiersPoetAtWork.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DebHiersPoetAtWork-225x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DebHiersPoetAtWork-225x400.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DebHiersPoetAtWork-576x1024.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/vice-versa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DebHiersPoetAtWork.jpeg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Debra Hiers is an Atlanta-based author and poet, writing coach, and editor.
