Write down\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>alkaline or acid. Very simple.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Three times a day I pee on a strip<br \/>\nand wait for color to rise.<br \/>\n<em>You\u2019re a swimming pool<\/em>, my husband jokes.<\/p>\n<p>In childhood it was my job to test the water.<br \/>\nI dunked the plastic rectangle<br \/>\nuntil both compartments filled, then carefully<br \/>\ncarried it to the basement shelf where chemicals<br \/>\nwere stored. Shook the bottles. Added three drops<br \/>\nto each side and watched the water bloom.<\/p>\n<p>Too red meant a cup of powder poured<br \/>\nin the deep end; too yellow and I\u2019d unscrew the top<br \/>\nfrom the chlorine bucket, eyes and nose burning,<br \/>\ngrab a tablet and take it to the filter\u2019s net.<\/p>\n<p>My brother and I swam for hours, diving<br \/>\nfor pennies our parents threw, taking turns<br \/>\nwith the good mask. I could hold my breath<br \/>\nthe whole length, slide my belly across the smooth<br \/>\nbottom, practice somersaults and handstands<br \/>\nuntil my fingers pruned and lips blued.<\/p>\n<p>One day I tried laps.<br \/>\nWinded by five, I took weeks<br \/>\nto build to ten. Another week to fifteen,<br \/>\nthen twenty \u2013 breaststroke, backstroke, crawl \u2013<br \/>\na steady striving through water<br \/>\nsuddenly spacious and yielding as sky.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-five, thirty-six, the water<br \/>\nchilled in spots weak morning sun had yet to find.<br \/>\nForty-seven, forty-eight, my rhythm<br \/>\nthe earth\u2019s rhythm, fatigue fallen away. Sixty,<br \/>\nsixty-one, sixty-two, I swam<br \/>\nbeyond thinking. Beyond time.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety-nine. The final push<br \/>\nof feet against side,<br \/>\nglide, then stroke, one hundred.<br \/>\nI pulled myself out,<br \/>\nstood dripping and triumphant on cobblestones;<br \/>\ngulped the sweet late summer air. Certain<br \/>\nmy body could do anything.<\/p>\n<h2>Hep C<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bilious lump, the liver<br \/>\nholds a virus like a grudge. Silently<\/p>\n<p>festers for decades.<br \/>\nMy doctor offers 40-60 odds, a year<\/p>\n<p>of fever, hair loss, muscle pain,<br \/>\nanemia. Calls me foolish for refusing.<\/p>\n<p>The herbal master mutters,<br \/>\n<em>stagnant anger<\/em>, hands me<\/p>\n<p>heavy sacks. I boil,<br \/>\nthen choke down the odiferous brew.<\/p>\n<p>Acupuncture, soul retrieval, a slick<br \/>\nhypnotist\u2019s low drone, powdered<\/p>\n<p>clam shells, oil of oregano, green tea\u2026<br \/>\nBefore, I was<\/p>\n<p>a lucky midlife woman planning<br \/>\nfamily camping trips.
