Rai Memorial Resolution Honoring Dr. John Casken"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>MEMORIAL RESOLUTION HONORING DR.\u00a0 JOHN CASKEN<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2340 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CaskenJohn-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CaskenJohn-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CaskenJohn.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We, the Faculty Senate of the University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa, wish on this day, November 20, 2024, to celebrate and honor the life and professional service of Dr. John Casken at the University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Casken, Chair and Associate Specialist of Nursing and former Director of International Health at the Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing (NAWSON), made numerous distinguished contributions to higher education and the larger community in Hawai`i.\u00a0 He was also the former Chair of the Council on Study Abroad, former Chair of the M\u0101noa Faculty Senate, Board Member of the University of Hawai`i Professional Assembly, and a Faculty Representative. Additionally, he was a Board member of the Hawai`i Health and Harm Reduction Center (H3RC) and its past president.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his appointment to the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, he was a faculty member in the UHM School of Public Health, where he taught classes, headed the UHM Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP), and recruited Native Hawaiians, American Indians and Alaska Natives to its Master of Public Health Program. \u00a0Dr. Casken was a respected faculty within the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Manoa Department of Nursing. He was especially esteemed by his graduate nursing students, who he inspired to identify ways that nurses can serve as leaders in improving community health by influencing health policy and addressing health and social needs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>John\u2019s commitment to the success of his students was legendary.\u00a0 He was an outstanding student advocate who supported his students so they would maximize their potential, serving as chair and advisor on many masters and doctoral dissertation committees.\u00a0 He was an excellent teacher and received the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching in 2000. \u00a0 He worked tirelessly on rural\/community health issues to help improve Native Hawaiian health.\u00a0 He was instrumental in launching the Dublin Health Sciences Study Abroad Program at University College Dublin, Ireland, for Nursing and Public Health undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Casken also served as a mentor and friend to colleagues, supporting their professional development and well-being with encouragement, insight, kindness, and wit.\u00a0 John was a long-term member of the M\u0101noa Faculty Senate who contributed in multiple roles over his many decades of service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,<\/b> that the M\u0101noa Faculty Senate wishes to honor our friend, mentor and colleague, Dr. John Casken, for his service and dedication to the UH-M\u0101noa community in recognition of this profound loss with his passing on October 27, 2024 at 84 years of age;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, <\/b>that we acknowledge with gratitude his model of innovative service to an international health community; generous mentorship, collegiality, and dedication to make this a better place for humanity; his clinical work in cross-cultural care and alleviation of health disparities; his dedication and determination to further higher education and clinical practice in the United States and in the international arena;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED<\/b>, that in recognition of his many professional accomplishments and service, the UHM faculty Senate expresses our enduring gratitude and honors his relentless commitment to student and faculty success.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Supporting Document:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1KMzOTb6XR1icuubfz5zkqThpVvxpeOnk\/view?usp=drive_link\">Personal Reflections<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEMORIAL RESOLUTION HONORING DR.\u00a0 JOHN CASKEN &nbsp; We, the Faculty Senate of the University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa, wish on [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"template":"","class_list":["post-2334","issues","type-issues","status-publish","hentry","statuses-resolutions-motions0passed","years-2024-2025"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/issues\/2334","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/issues"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/issues"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"version-history":[{"count":14,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/issues\/2334\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2350,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/issues\/2334\/revisions\/2350"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/uhmfs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2334"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
