Re-imagining Native Hawaiian Student Services: A renovation project to bring out Native Hawaiian Center to the heart of campus through collaboration and co-location with student services
The renovation will be the first step in realizing the long-term plan of having a comprehensive student services building and have the programs of K¨±lana Â鶹´«Ã½ be physically part of the piko (center) of campus, close to other student service and academic support areas. Honolulu Community College¡¯s long range development plan identifies space in the piko (center) of campus for student support services and student life. The first step in this plan is to create a student-friendly courtyard next to an existing science building. The college also just received funding from the state legislature to construct a new science building. Because of this move, the existing science building will be vacated. This is the space that was originally identified for student services. The activity of this grant would allow the College to renovate one wing of this U-shaped building with the purpose of relocating the following departments: H¨±lili Ke Kukui, ±Ê´Ç¡®¾± N¨¡ Nalu, and N¨¡ Papa Â鶹´«Ã½ faculty and classrooms, Academic Counseling, and Financial Aid. The long-term vision of this renovation is to bring key student services together in one central location while also being able to provide students the needed space to build community and feel at home on the campus.
