Not one, but three<\/em> PhD in SLS students received 2015 Language Learning Dissertation Grants. Congratulations, Hyunah Ahn<\/strong>, Wei-Li Hsu<\/strong>, and Junko Imai<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Pamela Stacey<\/strong> and Jay Tanaka<\/strong>, Fall 2014 recipients of the Whitten Prize for Scholarly Excellence<\/a><\/span>–an award for MA scholarly papers with double honors. Ms. Stacey and Mr. Tanaka also presented their research in the final SLS Brown Bag of Fall 2014<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

PhD students Eunseok Ro<\/strong> and Jay Tanaka<\/strong> both received GSO (Graduate Student Organization) funding to present at conferences in 2014\u00a0(see feature in the GSO Newsletter<\/a><\/span>). Congratulations!<\/p>\n

MA and AGC student in SLS Michelle Adams<\/strong> was awarded a 5-month, full-time transatlantic fellowship by the Pannonius Fellowship Program<\/a><\/span> for research and study abroad. Congratulations, Michelle!<\/p>\n

Minyoung Cho<\/strong>, PhD in SLS student, was the recipient of the 2014 American Association of University Women (AAUW)-Honolulu Branch<\/a><\/span> Graduate Scholarship in the amount of $10,000. Congratulations!!
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

PhD in SLS student Justin Cubilo<\/strong> was awarded a $2,000 Doctoral Dissertation Grant from TIRF, The International Research Foundation for English Language Education. The grant was awarded to Mr. Cubilo for his research entitled, “Video-Mediated Listening Passages and Typed Notetaking: Investigating Their Impact on Comprehension, Test Structure, and Item Performance.<\/span>” Congratulations, Justin!<\/p>\n

The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) has awarded PhD in SLS student Bal Krishna Sharma<\/strong> a $2,500 grant in the 2014 Doctoral Dissertation Grant competition for his research, “English and multilingualism in the tourist industry in Nepal.”
\nMr. Krishna Sharma also received a $8,000 Civil Society Scholar Award (CSSA) of the Open Society Foundations for his doctoral field work in 2014. Congratulations, Bal!<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Michael Bischoff<\/strong> and Rick Schoonmaker<\/strong>, Spring 2014 recipients, and Priw-Prae (Mint) Litticharoenporn<\/strong>, Summer 2014 recipient, of the Whitten Prize for Scholarly Excellence.<\/p>\n

Vietnamese Business Resources Association of Hawai\u02bbi (VBRAH) awarded a $1,000 graduate scholarship to PhD in SLS student Priscila Leal<\/strong> for her strong commitment to community service and academic excellence. As girls’ program leader and counselor, Ms. Leal plans fun activities and spiritual retreats to provide a safe space for young women aged 12-18 mainly from Micronesia or of Micronesian heritage. She feels blessed for the positive influence from “surrogate aunties” during her adolescent years in the Amazon, and hopes to show her gratitude in a small way through her community service work.<\/p>\n
