The series presents work in progress by faculty members and graduate students. Papers published in\u00a0<i>Second Language Studies\u00a0<\/i>reflect the focus of the Department&#8217;s graduate curriculum, which emphasizes the integration of theory and practice in the belief that practical questions and solutions in language teaching should be accountable both to theory and empirical testing. JD Brown served as editor from 1994-2019, followed by Dustin Crowther from 2020-2022. In 2023,\u00a0<i>Second Language Studies<\/i>\u00a0became fully student run, with Micah Mizukami being the first graduate student to serve as chief editor.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The 2023-2024 editorial board consists of chief editor Rickey Larkin, review editors Michol Miller and Micah Mizukami, submission editor Jue Wang, summary editor Milang Shin, and copy-editor Joonhee Kim. Our board serves on a rolling basis, and we are always seeking new students to join. Please approach any of us if interested in joining the editorial board.<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Second Language Studies\u00a0<\/i>accepts a range of materials for publication, including (but not limited to):<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Empirical Articles: Original research that involves collecting and analyzing either qualitative, quantitative, or both types of data. An empirical article is usually organized into Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Findings and Discussion sections. IRB approval must be obtained prior to data collection.<\/li>\r\n<li>Theoretical Papers: Papers that discuss theoretical perspectives in second language teaching,\u00a0 second language learning, second language use, and second language analysis.<\/li>\r\n<li>Research Proposals: Research proposals are research plans that describe the research question(s), methodology, plan for data collection and how the data will be analyzed. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit data collection tools (e.g., interview questions, testing materials, etc.), IRB is not required.<\/li>\r\n<li>Language Test Reviews: Papers that critically survey existing language tests, which includes general descriptions of the test, purposes, uses, and appraisal.<\/li>\r\n<li>Pedagogical Materials (with development notes): Pedagogical materials include lesson plans and teaching activities\/ideas that target specific language skills. The authors are encouraged to include actual materials with descriptions of targeted audience (e.g., learners, teachers, teaching contexts)<\/li>\r\n<li>Research Materials (with development notes): Research Materials include Interview protocols, list of interview questions, experimental materials, or any other materials that could be used for research purposes.<\/li>\r\n<li>Scholarly Interviews (e.g., visiting scholars, Brown Bag presenters): Video or audio-recorded conversations with experts in the field. The interviewer must obtain a media release form for the interview to be published in the SLS Papers.<\/li>\r\n<li>Short Essays: Brief papers advancing an opinion relevant to the field of Applied Linguistics. Opinion pieces should be no more than 3,000 words inclusive of references. The piece ought to present well developed arguments and be topical to current scholarship. They should be interesting, engaging, and may stimulate new ideas and provoke debate.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>We are open to all submissions relevant to second language studies, and will accept submissions from all members of the University of Hawai\u02bbi community. All submissions will first be reviewed by the editorial board for appropriateness for the journal, and will then undergo a single blind review. The goal of\u00a0<i>Second Language Studies<\/i>\u00a0is not to reject submissions, but help authors to further develop their submission to meet our expectations of quality. Second Language Studies publishes annually in Fall, and occasionally\u00a0in Spring.\u00a0If you have any questions regarding our submission and review process, or about how to become an editor, please do not hesitate to contact us.
