The Elizabeth Carr Holmes Scholarship honors the memory of Elizabeth Carr Holmes, emeritus professor of Speech at the University of Hawai’i. Professor Carr Holmes was widely known for her work in pidgin and creole languages and in ESL. She was also a a founding board member of the University of Hawai’i Foundation.<\/p>\n
In 1972, Professor Carr Holmes published a book titled “Da Kine Talk From Pidgin to Standard English in Hawaii”, which became newly available through University of Hawai’i Press in ScholarSpace<\/a> in 2019.<\/p>\n The Scholarship provides funds to enable full-time classified students in the BA, MA, AGC, and PhD in SLS programs to carry out program-related research. Priority is given in the following order: (1) to research for scholarly papers, theses, and dissertations; (2) to coursework designed to pilot materials or procedures for scholarly papers, theses, and dissertations; (3) pending availability of funds, to research deemed exceptional as part of SLS course requirements. \nTo apply for the Carr Holmes Scholarship, the student should submit their application and IRB
\napproval letter to their advisor. The advisor adds their recommendation and then submits to the Department Chair and Program Specialist.\n
