Who Can Apply<\/h3>\n

The Advanced Graduate Certificate program in Second Language Studies is designed for students who have completed a master’s or doctoral degree in\u00a0second language studies, applied linguistics, second language education, second language acquisition, TESOL, or other related field. We also welcome applicants with specialization in related disciplines such as anthropology, education, modern languages and literature, linguistics, and psychology.<\/p>\n

The AGC program attracts language professionals who wish to acquire advanced training in second language studies. Prospective applicants with specialized degrees from educational systems outside the U.S. (e.g., Examen d’\u00c9tat\/Staatsexamen) should contact the Graduate Chair of Second Language Studies (grdchr@hawaii.edu) to discuss their eligibility for applying.<\/p>\n

Applicants are also encouraged to contact Graduate Faculty<\/a> member(s) with whom they might wish to work.<\/p>\n

AGC Concurrent with a Graduate Degree at UH-M\u0101noa<\/h3>\n

Students currently pursuing another graduate degree in a related discipline at the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa have the opportunity to pursue an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Second Language Studies concurrently. No more than six credits of coursework may be double-counted for both the certificate and the concurrent graduate degree. (Note.<\/em>\u00a0Nine credits can be double-counted for the\u00a0AGC in SLS \u2011 Spanish Applied Linguistics<\/a>.) No research paper or thesis that has been used to fulfill the requirements for any other degree may be used to fulfill the Scholarly Paper requirement of the AGC in SLS.<\/p>\n

Applicants currently enrolled as classified graduate students at the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa are not required to resubmit official standardized test score reports or transcripts. However, if GRE scores are more than five years old and\/or TOEFL\/IELTS scores are more than two years old, new test scores are required. Current UH-M\u0101noa classified graduate applicants must complete and submit an online application form<\/a> along with the application fee. All application procedures remain the same (please see application steps 1-5 below).<\/p>\n

Describe your research interests, which faculty member(s) you are interested in working with, courses of interest, and include a brief summary of relevant professional experience and language skills.\nii. Letters from three individuals who have recent knowledge of your academic capacity are most helpful (e.g., current and past instructors, academic advisors, etc.)\u00a0Generally, letters from employers\u00a0or co-workers in non-academic settings\u00a0do not provide perspectives on your academic abilities, but we will consider all references. Ideally, at least one reference should relate to your stated areas of interest, and all letters should be recent. Use of official university or institutional letterhead is preferred.<\/p>\n

After logging in to the Graduate Application Supplemental Materials Upload Website<\/a>, click Request a Recommendation for each of your recommenders. Once admitted, students will receive an official letter of admittance from Graduate Division (via postal mail). Admitted students are asked to respond with their Statement of Intention to Register (SIR) to gradsir@hawaii.edu as soon as possible after receiving the official letter<\/em>, so that they can access the University’s services in a timely manner.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t2. Submit Official Test Score Report<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Admitted students are required to submit official standardized exam scores in order to enroll. Official score reports must be sent directly to Graduate Division. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa is 4867. Remember that TOEFL and IELTS scores cannot be more than 2 years old.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t3. Submit Official Transcript(s)<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Upon admission to UHM, only international applicants with proof of funding will receive visa documents.
\nBe sure to complete the Confidential Financial Statement for International Applicants<\/a> as soon as possible to avoid delays in applying for your student visa.\n\t\t\t\t\t5. FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Submit Health Insurance Documents<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Health insurance is mandatory for international students, but the university encourages all students to think about their health insurance needs and enroll in a plan that provides\u00a0adequate coverage.<\/p>\n

Proof of health insurance must be submitted to the Â鶹´«Ã½Student Health Insurance Office for those on a F-1 visa and to the International Student Services Office (ISS) for those on a J-1 visa. For more information, please visit:\u00a0https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?page_id=39<\/a>.<\/p>\n

**Spring 2021: Students intending to stay in their home countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic may request a health insurance exemption by contacting shio@hawaii.edu<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t6. Submit Health Clearance Form<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

All students are required to meet the immunization requirements before physically attending classes\u00a0at the university. For example, TB, MMR, Tdap, and Varicella are required for those planning to come to Hawaii. MCV is required for first-year students living in on-campus housing. For more information, please visit\u00a0https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/shs\/health_clearance\/<\/a>. Please note that a record of immunizations, signed, or stamped by a US licensed practitioner\u00a0or the Hawaii Department of Health may be submitted in lieu of the Health Clearance Form.<\/p>\n

The University Health Services offers\u00a0the TB test as well as the MMR and Varicella immunizations.<\/p>\n
