Safe Zone

Safe Zone symbol

The Safe Zone Program¡¯s objective is for trained participants to utilize their gained knowledge and skills to foster a safe and inclusive community for LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff to promote social justice in the University of Hawai?iHawai?i System. The program establishes a network of support and visibility for LGBTQ+ equity by providing advocates with posters and materials to share as resources on their campus. Contact your or uhlgbtq@hawaii.edu to schedule a training on your campus.

Upon completion of a Safe Zone Training, participants will be invited to become Advocates in the University of Hawai?i System Safe Zone Program.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will be able to identify their expected roles under and responsibilities to their respective campus and University of Hawai?i System policies.
  • Participants will demonstrate knowledge about the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Participants will be able to identify available LGBTQ+ campus and community resources.
  • Participants will be able to implement strategies to support and advocate for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff in the Âé¶¹´«Ã½system.

QSeries

QSERIES is created by Leeward CC¡¯s Counselor, Kalei Ruiz who designed the series to provide a platform through which connections can be made between queer stories, histories, and people.

QUEERIFY celebrates the intersections of Hawaiian History Month in September, and Honolulu Pride Month, Filipino History Month, and LGBT History Month in October. Held at the start of a new school year, the series represents new learning opportunities.

QUEERPHORIA serves as a precursor to pride in June. As a Spring event, the series represents newness and rebirth, celebrating queer stories, but also queer joy, wellness, and creativity.

Research and Scholarship

Campus climate is of great concern, as harassment, intimidation, fear and discrimination negatively impact students¡¯ access to education. The commission continues to evaluate campus data and share campus/community resources.
