A new science lab technician certificate program at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Maui College<\/a> beginning in fall 2019 will provide knowledge and skills to collect, analyze and interpret environmental and water quality data.<\/p>\n

The four-credit certificate program takes one year to complete and is offered as part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture water quality education grant, which develops innovative approaches, such as creating industry-aligned certificates, to increase participation of diverse students in STEM<\/abbr>-related fields.<\/p>\n

As critical water issues on Maui County continue to escalate, UH<\/abbr> Maui College faculty Andrea Kealoha<\/strong> said the workforce demand for lab technicians with expertise in environmental and water quality testing in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is projected to increase by 36 percent by 2025.<\/p>\n

Students interested in the natural sciences or those pursuing environmental or sustainability careers may consider the program. The program will offer $300 for completing the first course in fall (SCI<\/abbr> 190V) and then another $700 for finishing the last two spring classes. In total students will receive $1,000 for completing the four credit certificate. The deadline to apply for fall 2019 is Aug. 1.
