Now, as a teacher at Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Lahaina at Lahaina Intermediate, she\u2019s proud to teach <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> on the campus she once attended.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s super important because it\u2019s a part of who we are as a people,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;If we don\u2019t have our language, we don\u2019t have the stories that come from our people; we don\u2019t have the stories of this place that we come from.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Kanoelani Steward\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-99071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/system-alumni-steward-k.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Steward discovered an interest in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> and Hawaiian culture during her time at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>. After earning her liberal arts degree from <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, she moved to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, where she earned a <abbr title=\"bachelor of science\">BS<\/abbr> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mare.hawaii.edu\/\">marine science<\/a> and a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/hawaiian-studies.html\">Hawaiian studies<\/a>. She\u2019s now pursuing a master\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/ma_hll\">Hawaiian language and literature<\/a> from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo, via live streaming technology.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Find a hui,&rdquo; she advises students. &ldquo;When you have a hui and you work together, you\u2019re able to bounce ideas off of each other; you\u2019re able to study together.
