The film was nominated for six Emmys and took home three awards: Director (program, non-live), Editor (program, no time limit) and Photographer (program) from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nataspsw.org\/news\/\">National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Pacific Southwest Chapter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98781\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Three women holding Emmy awards, click for larger image\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-pcsu-emmys.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Liza Sullivan, Christy Martin and Annie Sullivan Kopsco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The Emmy awards are a wonderful way to recognize the filmmakers for their excellent work in helping to tell the story of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s sacred and beloved <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span>, and they did so with clarity, grace, empathy, beauty and respect,&rdquo; said <strong>Christy Martin<\/strong>, executive director of the film and leader of the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species project in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pcsuhawaii.org\/\">Pacific Studies Cooperative Unit<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Pacific Studies Cooperative Unit\">PSCU<\/abbr>) in the Department of Botany. <\/p>\n<p>The film highlights the importance of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s native tree, <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span>, and the current threat of <abbr>ROD<\/abbr>. On <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, hundreds of thousands of <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> have become infected and have died. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> scientists are working with state and federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations to learn about this disease and to assess what can be done to protect <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> for future generations. Part of that effort involves educating the public on the issue, what the team has learned and how people can reduce the chances of accidentally spreading the disease to new areas.<\/p>\n<p>The film also features <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> Extension Forester, <strong>J.B. Friday<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>With funding from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Tourism Authority, <em>Saving <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> \u2013 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Sacred Tree<\/em> premiered on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island and, through support from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, it was broadcast multiple times on the four public network affiliates for statewide reach in the fall of 2018.
