Writer and director Janet Mock<\/strong><\/a>, a native of Honolulu and graduate of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources\u2019 Fashion Design and Merchandising Program<\/a>, is the first black trans woman to land a three-year, multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix<\/a>. The agreement will allow Mock to create new shows and film projects for the giant content company highlighting communities that have historically been ignored by Hollywood. <\/p>\n

Mock will take on the role of executive producer and director for the upcoming Netflix series Hollywood<\/em>, created by Glee<\/em> producer Ryan Murphy<\/a>. She is also working on a college drama following a young trans woman and a series about New Orleans in the wake of slavery’s abolishment and a reboot of an unnamed sitcom. <\/p>\n

In addition to her new deal with Netflix, Mock will continue to work on the FX series Pose<\/em>, an LGBTQ<\/abbr> drama set in New York City\u2019s competitive ballroom scene. <\/p>\n

Mock is a cultural commentator and advocate for transgender women\u2019s rights. She first told her story of growing up as a transgender in 2011 in Marie Claire<\/a>. Her memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More<\/em><\/a>, debuted at number 19 on the New York Times Best Sellers list<\/a> in February 2014. In 2012, Mock launched #GirlsLikeUs<\/a>, a social movement that empowers transgender women and celebrates the diversity of womanhood. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
