Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> are working together to help future paramedics gain confidence and skills in handling emergencies involving infants and children.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>  <abbr title=\"community college\">CC<\/abbr> faculty have collaboratively developed and conducted the first Pre-Hospital Pediatric Paramedic Training Program to integrate with <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>  <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/academics\/programs-of-study\/emergency-medical-technician-program\/\">Emergency Medical Technician (<abbr>EMT<\/abbr>) Program<\/a>. The course was made possible through a grant provided by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pediatric Association Research and Education Foundation (<abbr>HPAREF<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Pediatric cases are such a small percentage of the cases they (paramedic students) are exposed to,&rdquo; said<strong> Dale Oda<\/strong>, emergency medical services program director at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>  <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This program gives them the opportunity to practice their skills in a controlled setting and get that kind of experience before they become certified paramedics.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Gaining experience at SimTiki<\/h2>\n<p>As an <abbr>EMT<\/abbr> for the City and County of Honolulu, most of Cyrus Camp\u2019s field experience has involved adults so, for him, learning with infant manikins in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> medical school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/centers-institutes\/simtiki\/\">SimTiki Simulation Center<\/a> has boosted his confidence.
