(Photo credit: Tim Pusack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers suggest the lionfish\u2019s success as a hunter is likely due to a combination of its particular stalking pattern, mouth suction and forward momentum as it strikes\u2014characteristics that are unlike native fish predators. <\/p>\n<p>The ranges of many predators are expected to grow due to climate change and future invasions. The new model&#8212;a systematic way of looking at behavioural traits\u2014is designed to help scientists and conservationists better understand how predators select their prey. <\/p>\n<p>In the case of lionfish, the scientists hope the model can help them identify areas where native species are most vulnerable to the novel stalking\/hunting strategy of lionfish as the invasion spreads. <\/p>\n<p>Hixon and Green hope their approach can be used by researchers in the Mediterranean who are keen to understand how fish in that sea will be most affected by the recent invasion of lionfish. <\/p>\n<p>Green is also adapting the model to examine predator-prey interactions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenfestocean.org\/en\/news-and-publications\/fact-sheet\/new-research-to-predict-changing-fish-distributions-using-predator-prey-relationships\">albacore tuna<\/a> with respect to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope that using knowledge of species behaviours can help scientists and managers predict who will eat whom when predators and prey encounter one another in new settings,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The study, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ecs2.2752\">Trait-Mediated Foraging Drives Patterns of Selective Predation by Native and Invasive Coral-Reef Fishes<\/a>,&rdquo; is published in <em>Ecosphere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98097\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-biology-lionfish-2.jpg\" alt=\"fish\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-biology-lionfish-2.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-biology-lionfish-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-biology-lionfish-2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lionfish in the Bahamas.
