Since 2016, female <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields have been mentoring female high and middle school aged students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of these fields, especially in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>, it\u2019s still male dominated, and it can be intimidating,\u201d said <strong>Olivia Murray<\/strong>, mentor and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa computer science major. \u201cAnd just for them to see another girl who was successful in the field, I think that would be really encouraging for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think it is really important that kids, especially girls, have an opportunity to get exposed to different kinds of math and more math especially if they are really curious like these girls are,\u201d said <strong>Isabella Tobin<\/strong>, mentor and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> candidate in math.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-97829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"U H Manoa student mentor for Kalani High School students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/manoa-mathematics-kalani-mentors.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They meet on the M\u0101noa campus once a week and are guided through subjects like computer coding and advance math by young women excelling in those fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese mentors have really helped me in my real life and my school life because, you know, coding and the math that we\u2019ve learned, I didn\u2019t learn in school and I didn\u2019t really even think there was a whole world beyond what I was learning in school,\u201d said Aedan Azeka, Kalani High School student.<\/p>\n<p>This group of Kalani High School students had an out-of-this-world experience thanks to the help of their mentors. They participated in a NASA project where an experiment they designed was lifted to the edge of the atmosphere and back in a stratospheric balloon.
