{"id":97268,"date":"2019-05-24T11:28:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T21:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=97268"},"modified":"2024-05-24T12:02:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T22:02:10","slug":"student-surprised-with-free-tuition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/24\/student-surprised-with-free-tuition\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaiser student wins <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa tuition in #MakeManoaYours contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap-post\"><figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe  id=\"_ytid_48017\"  width=\"720\" height=\"720\"  data-origwidth=\"720\" data-origheight=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bQ8SsLbAHVg?enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu&rel=0&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"Kaiser student wins Â鶹´«Ã½M\u0101noa tuition in #MakeManoaYours contest\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>It was a dream come true when Kaiser High School senior class president <strong>Megan Kaneshiro<\/strong> received a green <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/admissions\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> folder containing her acceptance letter in the mail back in spring. <\/p>\n<p>That dream became even sweeter during Kaiser\u2019s commencement rehearsal on May 23, when she was named the winner of a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa social media contest she entered hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiinewsnow.com\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> News Now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> cheer team and marching band amping up the crowd, which included Kaneshiro\u2019s unsuspecting family, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfcu.com\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Federal Credit Union<\/a> (<abbr>UHFCU<\/abbr>) President and <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> Travis Bow presented a shocked Kaneshiro with a large check for a semester of free tuition. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That was very overwhelming, I wasn\u2019t expecting it at all,&rdquo; said Kaneshiro. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She\u2019s a remarkable student, and what makes this one even sweeter is her parents are both <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduates, and her grandmother who is here is also a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate from 60 years ago,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner. &ldquo;I know she\u2019s going to do wonderful things at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is inspiring to see such a talented, driven and outstanding young person such as Megan receive the opportunity to pursue her academic goals,&rdquo; said Bow. &ldquo;<abbr>UHFCU<\/abbr> was founded upon the legacy and critical importance of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System education as well as giving back to our members and the local community.
