Image courtesy of CreativeCommons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the first time in more than 50 years, the sound of the <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> or Hawaiian petrel [<em>Pterodroma sandwichensis<\/em>] was heard on Maunakea, thanks to research funded by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malamamaunakea.org\/\">Office of Maunakea Management<\/a> and the hard work of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> Listening Observatory for Hawaiian Ecosystems Bioacoustics Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> forage at sea and fly inland after sunset to build underground nests in higher elevation areas throughout the Hawaiian Islands, including <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, Haleakal&#257; on Maui, Maunaloa on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island and <span aria-label=\"Lanaihale\">L\u0101na&#699;ihale<\/span> on <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L\u0101na&#699;i<\/span>. They are a state and federally listed endangered species and are highly susceptible to introduced predators such as cats and mongooses when they are nesting.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Finding <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> on Maunakea has been a very challenging and rewarding experience,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo graduate student <strong>Bret Nainoa Mossman<\/strong>, who along with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo researcher <strong>Patrick Hart<\/strong> have been looking and listening for the seabirds and <span aria-label=\"opeapea\">&#699;&#333;pe&#699;ape&#699;a<\/span>, or Hawaiian hoary bats, at high elevations on Maunakea. &ldquo;For me, it is a feeling of relief and hope to know that the <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> of Maunakea have been able to survive despite all of the challenges they face and it is heartening to know that this species is still here for future generations to see and appreciate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> has been detected acoustically since 2018 at many locations near Maunakea\u2019s <span aria label=\"Puukanakaleonui\">Pu&#699;ukanakaleonui<\/span>. In addition, a dead <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> was recently found in the forest reserve above <span aria-label=\"Puukanakaleonui\">Pu&#699;ukanakaleonui<\/span> on the eastern slope of Red Hill.
