The Office of Veteran Student Services<\/a> at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a> and members of the UH<\/abbr> System Veteran Task Force hosted the spring 2019 Annual Veteran Conference at the East West Center on April 26 and 27. The conference theme was Supporting Today\u2019s Veterans and Understanding their Diversity.<\/p>\n

Keynote speakers included state Sen.<\/abbr> Kaialiʻi<\/span> “Kai” Kahele and UH<\/abbr> Mānoa alum, and Jr.<\/abbr> Vice Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, Ronald Lockwood<\/strong>. This year\u2019s conference featured a plenary session speaker, Keanu Sai, a panel discussion focusing on student veteran diversity and six breakout sessions.<\/p>\n

The conference was well attended and included faculty, staff and students within the UH<\/abbr> system campuses and several private universities. Kenith Scott<\/strong>, the director of Veteran Student Services and the UH<\/abbr> System Veteran Task Force says they intend to host the conference again in spring 2020.<\/p>\n

“We believe veterans have a vital role to play in society and we know UH<\/abbr> can be a place to facilitate that transition,” Scott said. “We look forward to expanding how veterans can enhance their experiences with new skills and education while also providing the support they deserve.”<\/p>\n

In addition, the conference recognized three individuals for their commitment to supporting student veterans in the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> System.<\/p>\n

Student Veteran of the Year<\/h2>\n

Mary Campbell<\/strong> served 24 years in the United States Army retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Campbell served as the Student Veteran Organization secretary at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa and led the student group to become the most active student veteran organization in the state of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> through her leadership and commitment to excellence.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Student Veteran Community Partner of the Year<\/h2>\n

Ronald Lockwood serves as the Jr.<\/abbr> Vice Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and provided multiple grants supporting student veterans at UH<\/abbr> Mānoa. The grants helped purchase computers for the student veteran lounge at UH<\/abbr> Mānoa and supported sending seven student veterans to the Student Veterans of America National Conference in Orlando, Florida.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Veteran Faculty and Staff of the Year<\/h2>\n

Kristine Qureshi<\/strong> is the associate dean of research and director of global health at the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at UH<\/abbr> Mānoa. Qureshi serves as the principal investigator of the Veterans to Nurses program and has awarded over a hundred thousand dollars in extramural funding to student veterans in the UH<\/abbr> nursing consortium. She supported the creation of the student veteran lounge at UH<\/abbr> Mānoa with federal grant money.<\/p>\n
