Nandi Odhiambo<\/strong> and <strong>Jean Toyama<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> professor emerita, have been named 2019 recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/hlac\/cadesaw.html\">Elliot Cades Award for Literature<\/a>, considered among the most prestigious literary honors bestowed in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Odhiambo is the recipient of the established artist award, while Toyama won the emerging artist award.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95195\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/west-oahu-cades-award-toyama.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling for photo\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/west-oahu-cades-award-toyama.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/west-oahu-cades-award-toyama-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/west-oahu-cades-award-toyama-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jean Toyama<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Cades awards were created in 1988 in memory of Elliot Cades by Charlotte and J. Russell Cades and come with a cash prize for winners. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/hlac\/default.htm\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Literary Arts Council<\/a> administers the awards program as part of its mission to encourage and promote literature and literary activity in the state. Past winners of the established artist award include poet and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Associate Professor of English <strong>Craig Santos Perez<\/strong>, author Paul Theroux and Native Hawaiian author Kiana Davenport.<\/p>\n<p>Odhiambo, who was born in Nairobi, Kenya, published his most recent novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/bookhugpress.ca\/shop\/books\/smells-like-stars-by-d-nandi-odhiambo\/\"><em>Smells Like Stars<\/em><\/a>, last year. His first novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/978-1-896095-26-4\"><em>diss\/ed banded nations<\/em><\/a>, was published in 1998 and followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kipligats-Chance-Novel-David-Odhiambo\/dp\/B000H2N9D6\"><em>Kipligat&#8217;s Chance<\/em><\/a> in 2003. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Reverends-Apprentice-David-N-Odhiambo\/dp\/155152242X\/\"><em>The Reverend&#8217;s Apprentice<\/em><\/a> was published in 2008. He has an <abbr title=\"Master of Fine Arts\">MFA<\/abbr> in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts&#8211;Amherst and a <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in English from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>Toyama was a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty member for more than 30 years, teaching classes in French language and literature, poetry and the novel. She is the author of several linked poetry and commentary works, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-We-Must-Remember-Linked\/dp\/0910043973\"><em>What We Must Remember<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Choice-but-Follow-Christy-Passion-ebook\/dp\/B005HRYE7Q\/\"><em>No Choice But to Follow<\/em><\/a>, with fellow poets Ann Inoshita, Juliet Kono and Christy Passion. She is the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Prepositions-Jean-Yamasaki-Toyama\/dp\/0997002034\"><em>Prepositions<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kellis-Hanauma-Friends-Hawaiian-Dwellers\/dp\/1453778799\"><em>Kelli\u2019s Hanauma Friends<\/em><\/a>, a book of poems.<\/p>\n<p>Odhiambo and Toyama are scheduled to receive their awards and give readings from their works on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m., during the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiibookandmusicfestival.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Book &#38; Music Festival<\/a> on the Honolulu Municipal Building grounds.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Greg Wiles<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu's\">O&#699;ahu&#8217;s<\/span> D.
