(Photo credit: Alicia Kutkut Arroyo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Alicia Kutkut Arroyo<\/strong> had the right idea when she finished her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a> doctoral (<abbr>DArch<\/abbr>) dissertation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> last year. After she turned it into her dissertation committee, chaired by Professor <strong>Pu Miao<\/strong>, she thought, why not turn it into a book?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=al+zaatari+refugee+camps+permanent+housing&#038;dc&#038;crid=16719LTLRRD8V&#038;sprefix=al+za%2Caps%2C276&#038;ref=a9_sc_1\"><em>Al Zaatari Refugee Camp as Permanent Housing<\/em><\/a>, published in March 2019 by Amazon Digital Service for Kindle, has been nominated for two awards: one from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Architecture Foundation and the other for the Architectural Research Centers Consortium King Student Medal for Excellence. Kutkut Arroyo is also pursuing publication of the book as a paperback.<\/p>\n<p>Kutkut Arroyo&#8217;s 190-page book envisions the transitional role of refugee camps from temporary structures to more permanent alternatives. &ldquo;Alicia proposes five design solutions for the Al Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, and suggests that their implementation is a way to help refugees become an active part of society for a better and brighter future,&rdquo; said Miao.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/manoa-arch-alicia-kutkut-book-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Book cover\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-95056\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/manoa-arch-alicia-kutkut-book-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/manoa-arch-alicia-kutkut-book-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/manoa-arch-alicia-kutkut-book.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kutkut Arroyo said what amazed her most on visiting Al Zaatari was the people&#8217;s will to survive despite harsh conditions. &ldquo;They were innovative and making the best of their situation,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I also learned that human compassion can be given with a smile, a word, an action. It can change the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Alicia&#8217;s published <abbr>DArch<\/abbr> dissertation shows that architectural research can fulfill one&#8217;s social responsibility while achieving good academic quality,&rdquo; said Miao. &ldquo;I am happy for her and the school.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Added Interim Dean <strong>William Chapman<\/strong>, &ldquo;This couldn&#8217;t be more timely, given the recent news on Israel&#8217;s claim to parts of the West Bank. We&#8217;re very proud of her.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Since earning her <abbr>DArch<\/abbr> Aiea resident Kutkut Arroyo is working to establish a design-build firm with husband Keith Arroyo.
