He is from North Korea, where he was a propaganda artist for the North Korean government for two decades. After defecting in 2002, Byeok has turned his prolific creativity into powerful, satirical art using North Korea\u2019s ruling culture as motifs. He has been featured in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <abbr title=\"National Public Radio\">NPR<\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"American Broadcasting Company\">ABC<\/abbr> News, Reuters, <em>Huffington Post<\/em>, <em>The Guardian<\/em> and <abbr title=\"Cable News Network\">CNN<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>Song Byeok visits the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> to showcase his art in the exhibit, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/korea\/pages\/about\/calendar.html?loxi_pathname=%2Fthe-iconoclast-the-art-of-song-byeok-70\">The Iconoclast: Art of Song Byeok<\/a><\/em>, April 17 and 18, 9 a.m.&#8211;5 p.m. at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/korea\/\">Center for Korean Studies<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He will participate in a conference held at the Center for Korean Studies on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/korea\/pages\/about\/calendar.html?loxi_pathname=%2Fthe-north-korean-diaspora-art-and-politics-63\">&ldquo;The North Korean Diaspora: Art and Politics&rdquo;<\/a> with other experts on April 17, 2&#8211;5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The event is organized by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Center for Korean Studies and is supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Studies Promotion Service of the Academy of Korean Studies.<\/p>\n<h2>Conference schedule<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Welcome<\/strong>, 2&#8211;2:05 p.m.<br \/>\n<strong>Tae-Ung Baik<\/strong> (Center for Korean Studies, <a href=\"http:\/\/law.hawaii.edu\">William S.
