Rocketry is something that I\u2019ve always found super interesting,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Lauren Grzegorczyk<\/strong>. &ldquo;Our team for this specific project had to design, engineer\u2013this is all real-world experience we\u2019re gaining. It\u2019s just a type of experience that you can\u2019t really replicate in classes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Student Launch competition teams are challenged to &ldquo;call their shot&rdquo; and predict before launch day how high their rocket will fly. Project Imua\u2019s 10-foot-tall rocket is named &ldquo;Fissure 8&rdquo; after the prominent volcanic vent in the 2018 eruption on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. Their payload is a four-wheeled rover named &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hoomau\">Ho&#699;omau<\/span>&rdquo; (the Hawaiian values of perseverance and persistence), designed to travel 10 feet before collecting a soil sample.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94091\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-project-imua-pre-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Manoa mechanical engineering student Matthew Nakamura works on the Project Imua rocket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The challenge is being held near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/marshall\/home\/index.html\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr>\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center<\/a> in Huntsville, Alabama, culminating with student rocket launches on April 6, 2019, and featuring the work of 52 teams from 21 states.<\/p>\n<p>At the welcome ceremony for the competition, students heard from <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Deputy Manager Trey Cate about the Space Launch System (<abbr>SLS<\/abbr>), the most powerful rocket <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> has ever built. &ldquo;<abbr>SLS<\/abbr> will enable astronauts to begin their journey to explore destinations far into the solar system,&rdquo; according to <abbr>NASA<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Takahashi<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa mechanical engineering student, said, &ldquo;I would describe rocket science to be very challenging, difficult at times, sometimes it\u2019s also very stressful, but, at the end of the day, it\u2019s very rewarding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Project Imua\u2019s primary mission is to develop small payloads for space flight while providing undergraduates with project-based learning opportunities in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> fields. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium<\/a> awarded Project Imua a grant of $65,931, which covered materials, student stipends and travel expenses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>:  <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> will be livestreaming the launches, currently slated for Saturday, April 6, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NASAStudentLaunch\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Student Launch Facebook page<\/a>. The broadcast will start at 8:40 a.m. Central Daylight Time (<abbr>CDT<\/abbr>). Livestream of the launches includes interviews with the teams and <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> <abbr>VIP<\/abbr>s and guests.
