Richardson School of Law.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dean <strong>Avi Soifer<\/strong> greeted students with a warm welcome to a school lauded for its diversity and humanity. Incoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/student-organizations\/student-bar-association-sba\">Student Bar Association<\/a> President <strong>Ian F. Tapu<\/strong> shared his personal story of being the first in his family to finish college and to attend law school. And Assistant Professor <strong>Troy J.H. Andrade<\/strong> offered a compelling overview of the law school&#8217;s origins and its 45-year history.<\/p>\n<p>Said Andrade, &ldquo;To understand the essence of our law school, it&#8217;s important to know and appreciate the life and legacy of <strong>CJ (William) Richardson<\/strong>. His life provides such an apt example of the way in which, despite struggles, change in the law&#8212;real change&#8212;is possible, and can make <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> a better place.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The welcome chant by Professor <strong>Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie<\/strong> and hula by current law student <strong>Tarita Keohokalole-Look<\/strong> launched a full day of introductions to the world of legal studies, while <strong>Kenneth Lawson<\/strong>&#8217;s class in criminal law about self-defense and battered women&#8217;s syndrome provided a touch of gritty reality.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering drew 33 incoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/jd\">full-time <abbr title=\"juris doctorate\">JD<\/abbr> program<\/a> students, and five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/evening-part-time-program\">Evening Part-Time Program<\/a> students.
