Burns School of Medicine<\/a> graduate research assistant with <strong>Robert Nichols<\/strong>, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/graduate\/content\/cell-and-molecular-biology\">cell and molecular biology<\/a>, and was involved in his recent discovery of a potential new approach to treating Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What we hope for is to provide a better understanding of the disease in order to prevent and treat the neurodegenerative disorder,&rdquo; she  said.<\/p>\n<p>Taketa, a Roosevelt High School and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate, was named a 65th Cherry Blossom Festival <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Princess in 2017. She is currently pursuing her master&#8217;s degree in cell and molecular biology at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and is one of the many examples of the various talents and faces that make up <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and its medical school.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Deborah Manog Dimaya<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meet Ruth Taketa, a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Manoa John A.
