A University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> delegation visited The Evergreen State College<\/a> in Washington state to explore a model of an indigenous arts program at Evergreen\u2019s Indigenous Arts Campus<\/a> and Native Programs<\/a> curriculum.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re here at Evergreen on a mission,” said Taupōuri Tangarō<\/strong>, professor of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> life styles at Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr>. “Evergreen has always inspired us and we\u2019re here to celebrate this inspiration as we prepare to deliver our Hawaiian indigenous arts program for the advancement of indigenous well-being.”<\/p>\n

Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr> will host a 2019 indigenous arts summer symposium as the first step in gauging community interest and support in the proposed program.<\/p>\n

“The proposed program will pilot a focus on indigenous arts in anticipation that it will grow into a two-year community college program with pathways to a four-year degree,” says Gail Makuakāne-Lundin<\/strong>, director of the UH<\/abbr> System Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Papa O Ke Ao<\/a> and interim executive assistant to the UH<\/abbr> Hilo chancellor. Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Papa O Ke Ao is a UH<\/abbr> work committee with representatives from each campus, that is tasked with helping to make UH<\/abbr> a leader in indigenous education.<\/p>\n

“The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> welcomes ways to study indigenous cultures as contributors to society instead of simple observations of their art,” added Makuakāne-Lundin.<\/p>\n
