Collaborators who created this amazing experience include the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Music Department; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation; the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Symphony Orchestra and the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Performers are from the <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Choral Society, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu,\">O&#699;ahu,<\/span> the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Youth Opera Chorus, community choirs and IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre.<\/p>\n<h2>The dream<\/h2>\n<p>It was philanthropist Elizabeth Wong who dreamed of a symphony in honor of the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span> and its M&#257;lama Honua Voyage around the world. Through her friend SaraLyn Smith at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation, she sought out Foumai to compose it. Together the three of them built a collaborative team to bring the music and artistic communities together with the Polynesian Voyaging Society in a historic retelling of <span aria-label=\"Hokulea's\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a\u2019s<\/span> story through symphony orchestra and chorus.<\/p>\n<p>The chorus will be singing the words of Polynesian voyaging greats Eddie Aikau, Nainoa Thompson, Mau Piailug, Sam Kaai and Sam Low.<\/p>\n<h2>Composer Michael-Thomas Foumai<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93256\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manoa-foumai-m-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Michael-Thomas Foumai\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manoa-foumai-m-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manoa-foumai-m-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manoa-foumai-m-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manoa-foumai-m.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael-Thomas Foumai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Foumai, the winner of the 2017 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation young composer award, is a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa lecturer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would describe <em>Raise Hawaiki<\/em> as an epic of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; says Foumai, who says the origins of both music and voyaging are connected through the ancient Greeks. Master Navigator Thompson told Foumai that, early on, when Polynesian voyaging traditions were deemed lost, he and his team studied ancient Greek navigation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That for me is what <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span> is,&rdquo; says Foumai. &ldquo;It is the resurrection.
