said <abbr title=\"Academy for Creative Media\">ACM<\/abbr> Chair <strong>Tom Brislin<\/strong>. &ldquo;They are true reflections of <abbr>ACM<\/abbr>&rsquo;s mission to empower our students to develop their own voices to tell original stories for the screen that reflect and transmit authentic cultures of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, Asia and the Pacific.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Six other films from <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> Exchange student filmmakers from Shanghai will be featured at an earlier 3:45 p.m. screening, including the shot-in-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> documentary, <em>Yoyo&#8217;s Story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Films to be screened include&#8212;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Happy Accidents<\/em>, an upbeat made-in-Shanghai film referring to the happy accidents that life can bring, by <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> filmmakers <strong>Laurie Arakaki<\/strong> and <strong>Jason Kaneshiro<\/strong>, and Shanghai University filmmaker Cai Huihui<\/li>\n<li><em><span aria-label=\"Paahana\">Pa&#699;ahana<\/span><\/em> by <strong>Lana Dang<\/strong>, a Hawaiian-language film that won the 2011 <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> Best Drama Award, was also a <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> Exchange collaboration filmed with Shanghai University students<\/li>\n<li><em>Huki Ulua<\/em>, also by Dang, a light look at dating and the importance of knowing your roots<\/li>\n<li><em>Flat<\/em> by <strong>Alex Bocchieri<\/strong>, which shows how a flat tire can also take the air out of an intense sibling rivalry<\/li>\n<li><em>Skin Therapy<\/em> by <strong>Andrew Snyder<\/strong>, a tale of how even bikers can have a midlife crisis<\/li>\n<li><em>Theurgy for the Soul<\/em> by <strong>Nick Ower<\/strong>, a &ldquo;what-if&rdquo; film where lives are re-lived till they get it right<\/li>\n<li><em>The Reason<\/em> by <strong>Chadwick Shimomura<\/strong>, a war story set in Afghanistan and that reverberates to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>The Sweepstakes<\/em> by <strong>Jamie Poliahu<\/strong>, where the real prize just might be friendship<\/li>\n<li><em>Musubi Man<\/em> by <strong>Paul Higa<\/strong>, a tasty tale in Pidgin about where those everywhere &ldquo;grindz&rdquo; really come from<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The student filmmakers will be present at the <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> Night at <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> screening to be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and to discuss their films.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy for Creative Media, part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/arthum\">College of Arts and Humanities<\/a>, emphasizes narrative, or story telling, theories, skills and application across multiple platforms of digital media and within a context of cultural and aesthetic values. <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> offers a core curriculum in three tracks&#8212;digital cinema, computer animation and critical studies.
