And turning the Lake Wilson Freshwater Park in Wahiaw&#257; into an ecological, social, cultural and historic gem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91302\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-uhcdc-panel-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-uhcdc-panel-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-uhcdc-panel-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-uhcdc-panel-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-uhcdc-panel.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel discussion at &ldquo;Proof of Concept: Public-Private Partnerships at Work&rdquo; at the state Capitol Auditorium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These are just three projects that multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr><\/a> units, led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcdc.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Community Design Center<\/a> (<abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a>, are working on with state agencies to enhance research, planning and design services throughout the state. &ldquo;Proof of Concept: Public-Private Partnerships at Work&rdquo; featured presentations and a panel discussion on February 19 at the state Capitol Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are happy to represent the university&#8217;s capacity to be a multi-disciplinary problem-solving resource, and are committed to make a difference through design,&rdquo; said <strong>Cathi Ho Schar<\/strong>, <abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr> director. &ldquo;This event focused on sharing the breadth and depth of how our faculty and students, along with agency partners, are addressing the critical problems facing our state and built environments.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><abbr>TOD<\/abbr> development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/departments\/index.cfm?subject=PLAN\">Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a> (<abbr>DURP<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> are working on a framework to develop state parcels surrounding the Waipahu Pouhala rail station. <abbr>DURP<\/abbr> Assistant Professor <strong>Suwan Shen<\/strong> and Architecture Associate Professor <strong>Hyoung-June Park<\/strong> are focusing on transportation and infrastructure studies and a digital optimization model for the area.<\/p>\n<p><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The future buildout of an empty annex building at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center could be transformed into a Phase I clinical trials center and community asset, according to <strong>Brian Strawn<\/strong>, <abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr> senior researcher. In addition to analysis and design, Strawn&#8217;s team built a full-scale prototype of the clinical trials suite.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lake Wilson improvements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Architecture Associate Professor <strong>Judith Stilgenbauer<\/strong> presented her strategies to protect and enhance the Lake Wilson Freshwater Park, which would also provide public open space amenities for the Central <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> community.
