  {"id":9119,"date":"2012-08-20T20:06:05","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T06:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=9119"},"modified":"2021-03-12T14:09:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T00:09:38","slug":"first-day-of-classes-at-new-uh-west-oahu-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/08\/20\/first-day-of-classes-at-new-uh-west-oahu-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"First day of classes at new <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IVhiFCUaWGs?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>After more than four decades the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> has its own campus and is officially open for classes. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The classrooms, the library and everything is new so it makes me feel like a fresh start in life,&rdquo; said West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> freshman Joyce Gail Jumalon. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s really great,&rdquo; agreed fellow freshman Jaryn Shinn. &ldquo;It&#8217;s nice and the classes are brand new and everything so it&#8217;s great being here.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s exciting,&rdquo; said sophomore Kasandra Puahala. &ldquo;I still feel like a freshman, because it&#8217;s a new campus, a new exploration.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>About 2,000 students are attending <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> during the first fall semester on the new campus grounds. <\/p>\n<p>Five new buildings were completed over the last two years including a new campus center and school cafeteria and a 100,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space with state of the art equipment. There&#8217;s also the Great Lawn, about four acres of green grass, where students can gather, eat, study and socialize. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s so green and wide open,&rdquo; said West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> freshman Jeremieh Husley. &ldquo;It just looks so surreal how windy and nice it looks.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s library and resource center is now a new landmark in Kapolei thanks to its stunning architecture. More importantly, the two-story, 60,000 square foot structure is the heart of the new campus. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is not just a space but this is a place for the students to hang out, to meet up with there friends, to collaborate on projects to even take a nap if they have some break time between their class times,&rdquo; said Interim Library Director Sarah Gilman. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> is the only public four-year university located in the leeward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> area and though 40 years in the making, this is still just the beginning.
