A two-week mission to perform scientific experiments and test technological instruments needed for the future exploration of the Moon or Mars commenced on February 20 at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Exploration Analog and Simulation<\/a> (HI-SEAS<\/abbr>) habitat on the slopes of Mauna Loa on Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n

The crew of six is under the command of UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Michaela Musilova<\/strong>, chief investigator for HI-SEAS<\/abbr> and the International Moonbase Alliance.<\/p>\n

Musilova said, “These missions are open to researchers around the world to take part in, provided their research will help contribute to the exploration and colonization of the Moon and Mars.”<\/p>\n

The mission is under the EuroMoonMars initiative, led by the International Lunar Exploration Working Group<\/a> (ILEWG<\/abbr>) of the European Space Agency (ESA<\/abbr>), in collaboration with the International Moonbase Alliance (IMA<\/abbr>), European Space Research and Technology Centre, Vrije Universiteit (VU<\/abbr>) Amsterdam and HI-SEAS<\/abbr>. It is part of a series of projects led by IMA<\/abbr>, which is planning on building a moonbase on the Moon and a prototype moonbase on Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n
