Courtesy photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> professor of kinesiology and exercise sciences (<abbr>KES<\/abbr>), received the 2018&#8211;2019 Jerry R. Thomas Distinguished Leadership Award for Bachelor\u2019s Degree Granting Departments, the highest honor given by the American Kinesiology Association (<abbr>AKA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harald Barkhoff<\/strong> received the recognition in January at the <abbr>AKA<\/abbr> annual leadership conference in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was also appointed to the association\u2019s board of directors and diversity committee.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am truly humbled and honored to have received such a prestigious award on a national level,&rdquo; said Barkhoff. &ldquo;It was quite a surprise.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90813\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-harald-barkhoff-award.jpg\" alt=\"professor with his award\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-harald-barkhoff-award.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-harald-barkhoff-award-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harald Barkhoff with his award received from the American Kinesiology Association, January 26, 2019. Courtesy photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Elaine Heiby<\/strong>, professor emerita of psychology at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, nominated Barkhoff for the award. Barkhoff\u2019s <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo colleagues <strong>Misty Pacheco<\/strong>, an associate professor of <abbr>KES<\/abbr>, and <strong>Matt Platz<\/strong>, professor of chemistry and former vice chancellor for academic affairs, provided letters of support.<\/p>\n<p>Heiby\u2019s nomination letter cited Barkhoff\u2019s introduction of classes on indigenous sports such as ocean paddling and surfing that had not previously existed in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System. Barkhoff\u2019s papers at conferences in Polynesia introduced the integration of kinesiology, the scientific study of body movement, in the context of island cultures&#8211;in particular, indigenous and Native Hawaiian knowledge and belief systems. The award winner is also the <abbr>KES<\/abbr> department chair.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Overall, under Barkhoff\u2019s leadership, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo has expanded the influence of kinesiology in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific Islands,&rdquo; said Heiby.<\/p>\n<p>While the national award recognizes the leadership of an individual, Barkhoff feels it is really a reflection and recognition for the successful efforts of the <abbr>KES<\/abbr> team and community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is no greater compliment than students and our community trusting us with their education,&rdquo; said Barkhoff. &ldquo;And in return we have always tried to put our students and their needs first.
