Each year the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces the top-producing institutions for the <a href=\"http:\/\/eca.state.gov\/fulbright\">Fulbright Program<\/a>, the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange program. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/Top-Producers-of-Fulbright\/245641?cid=wcontentlist_hp_latest\">lists are published annually in <em>The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/a>. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa last received this recognition in 2010&#8211;2011.<\/p>\n<p>Six scholars from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa were awarded Fulbright awards for 2018&#8211;2019&#8212;&ldquo;more than any other university in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has produced a total of 43 Fulbright recipients since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Fulbright programs have long enabled our faculty to gain valuable experience overseas, developing and nurturing important international ties, with lasting benefit for faculty and students at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and in the many countries where they conduct research or teach,&rdquo; said Vice Chancellor for Research and Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>. &ldquo;We are proud that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa continues to field so many successful applicants; this kind of international engagement is a key component of who we are as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s flagship university.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We thank the colleges and universities across the United States that we are recognizing as Fulbright top-producing institutions for their role in increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,&rdquo; said Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce. &ldquo;We are proud of all the Fulbright students and scholars from these institutions who represent America abroad, increasing and sharing their skills and knowledge on a global stage.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Fulbright Scholars from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 2018&#8211;2019 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Betsy Gilliland<\/strong>, associate professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sls\/\">second language studies<\/a> (Chile)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phillip Ooi<\/strong>, professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cee.hawaii.edu\/\">civil and environmental engineering<\/a> (Japan)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Georganne Nordstrom<\/strong>, associate professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English<\/a> (Ireland)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adam Smith<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> candidate, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/biology\/\">biology<\/a> (Iceland)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Stirr<\/strong>, associate professor, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/asianstudies\/\">Asian studies<\/a> (Nepal)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tamara von Albertini Vassileff<\/strong>, professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/phil\/\">philosophy<\/a> (Bulgaria)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An information session for faculty and graduate students will take place on Tuesday, February 26, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Kuykendall 106.<\/p>\n<p>An information session for undergraduate students will take place on Tuesday, February 26, from 3 to 4 p.m. in <abbr title=\"Queen Liliuokalani Center for Student Services\">QLC<\/abbr> 411, including Luce, Marshall and Rhodes Scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>The Fulbright Scholar Program is supported at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa through Fulbright program advisors <strong>R. Over 800 <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> college and university faculty and administrators, professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, and independent scholars are awarded Fulbright grants to teach and\/or conduct research annually.
