  {"id":90517,"date":"2019-02-08T16:10:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T02:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=90517"},"modified":"2019-02-08T16:39:18","modified_gmt":"2019-02-09T02:39:18","slug":"campus-celebrates-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/02\/08\/campus-celebrates-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus celebrates diversity and builds community"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_90503\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90503\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-campus-climate-beloved-community.jpg\" alt=\"people attending campus event\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-campus-climate-beloved-community.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-campus-climate-beloved-community-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90503\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students attend kick-off event to build a better campus community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The kick-off event for &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Aohe\">A&#699;ohe<\/span> hana nui ke alu <span aria-label=\"ia\">&#699;ia<\/span>: Building our beloved campus community together,&rdquo; drew several hundred students, faculty and staff to the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> Campus Center courtyard on February 7.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today we\u2019re celebrating the diversity we have at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and the respect we have for each other,&rdquo; said <strong>Camaron Miyamoto<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/lgbtq\/\"><abbr title=\"lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender\">LGBT<\/abbr> Student Services Office<\/a> and event organizer. &ldquo;It\u2019s exciting that we have the opportunity to launch a semester-long series of events being sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/chancellor\/\">Office of the Chancellor<\/a> and this campus climate committee.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>More than 35 offices, units and organizations were on hand to answer questions. Students stopped by tables in the Campus Center courtyard to get information ranging from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/dps\/\">Department of Public Safety<\/a> services to <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/titleix\/\">Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral nine\">IX<\/abbr><\/a> and other resources available for students on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Units encouraged helping the campus as well as a global community. Attendees dropped off non-perishable food and toiletry items to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Food Vault, with the first 50 to donate receiving reusable straws and cleaners, courtesy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/studentaffairs.manoa.hawaii.edu\/about\/\">Office of the Vice Chancellor for Students<\/a>. A total of 452 <abbr title=\"pounds\">lbs<\/abbr> of food and 30.5 <abbr>lbs<\/abbr> of toiletries were collected.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students <strong>Sara Pearce<\/strong> and <strong>Daniela Casillas<\/strong> stopped by the Peace Corps table after getting water and Peace Tea, courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/uhm.sodexomyway.com\/\">Sodexo <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/food\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Food Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m really interested in the Peace Corps and really want to go to Africa,&rdquo; said Pearce. &ldquo;I want to help with the developing communities over there.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Participating groups were encouraged to showcase how they can help build a better community, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ACCESS<\/li>\n<li>Best Buddies <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\/Self-Advocacy Advisory Council<\/li>\n<li>Campus Arboretum<\/li>\n<li>Center for Chinese Studies\u2014Confucius Institute<\/li>\n<li>College of Social Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Graduate Women in Science<\/li>\n<li>KOKUA Program<\/li>\n<li>M\u0101noa Bookstore<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Department of Public Safety<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa International Exchange<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Online Learning Academy<\/li>\n<li>M\u0101noa Peer Advisors Program<\/li>\n<li>M\u0101noa Dining Services<\/li>\n<li>Master of Education in Teaching Program and Department of Special Education<\/li>\n<li>National Student Exchange<\/li>\n<li>Office of Civic and Community Engagement<\/li>\n<li>Office of Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral nine\">IX<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Pause Space<\/li>\n<li>Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic (William S.
