The Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> coordinator at Ala Wai Elementary is the only <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Milken Educator in 2019, and is among 33 teachers nationwide selected for the honor this season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90360\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-education-milken-king-s-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Sara King\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-education-milken-king-s-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-education-milken-king-s-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manoa-education-milken-king-s.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara King (Photo credit: Milken Family Foundation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milkeneducatorawards.org\/\">Milken Award<\/a> honors outstanding excellence in education and comes with an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>King received the surprise award in a school-wide assembly in front of more than 400 cheering students, teachers and staff members. As the Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> coordinator for Ala Wai Elementary, King develops school-wide support systems that allow all students to thrive and reach their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was little, so it was never a question of what I wanted to major in,&rdquo; said King. As the school\u2019s Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> coordinator, King ensures that she spends time with students every day. &ldquo;My favorite part of the day is working with my small groups of children. In deciding to come out of the classroom, one of my things was that I want to still be with kids every single day,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>King earned her bachelor\u2019s in elementary education and master\u2019s in curriculum studies, emphasizing multicultural education.<\/p>\n<p>The Milken Educator Awards program, which was launched by the Milken Family Foundation in 1987, has been described as &ldquo;the Oscars of teaching&rdquo; by <em>Teacher<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>King is the 77th <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> teacher to receive the Milken Educator Award since the state joined the program in 1990.
