(Photo credit: Ji Hoon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A team of researchers from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> and the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/articles\/5347\/?utm_source=soye20185&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_content=single_article5\">conducted a study of coral resiliency<\/a> that showed some corals are better able to tolerate heat than similar corals tested in the 1970&#8217;s. (Photo credit: Claire Lager)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The scientists replicated the identical experimental system, methodology, coral species, collection site, and even brought in one of the original researchers, <strong>Steve Coles<\/strong>, adjunct faculty at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> (<abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>). The Hawaiian corals from <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K&#257;ne&#699;ohe<\/span> Bay, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> showed differences in coral bleaching temperature either because of changes in physiological processes (acclimatization) or because of natural selection for the survival of more temperature tolerant corals (adaptation).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Until now, it had not been determined how long these processes take or if this change can occur at a pace rapid enough to adjust to the frequency and severity of current elevated temperature events,&rdquo; said <a href=\"https:\/\/coralreefecologylab.com\/people\/\"><strong><span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Rodgers<\/strong><\/a>, study co-author and principal investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coralreefecologylab.com\/\">Coral Reef Ecology Lab<\/a> at <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>. &ldquo;From prior temperature-related research and results of the extensive 2014\u20132015 bleaching event, we do know that this change is not occurring at a pace rapid enough to adjust to the frequency and severity of current elevated temperature events.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>A pivotal place in history<\/h2>\n<p>Climate change is increasing at an alarming rate including the warming and chemical changes in the ocean. The ocean drives weather and climate, stabilizes the temperature, generates most of the oxygen in the atmosphere and absorbs much of the carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p>The International Panel on Climate Change, a group of renowned scientists from over 40 countries recently announced their predictions based on tens of thousands of scientific papers.
