Later that year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Teacher Standards Board<\/a> approved ethnomathematics as a field of licensure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it\u2019s fantastic that the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Teachers Standards Board has added ethnomathematics as a field, because it just validates everything that we\u2019re doing,&rdquo; said Jaqueline Vallejo-San Agustin, a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Technology Academy teacher. &ldquo;It emphasizes the importance of integrating culture in our school curricula, especially in math, which is a subject that culture isn\u2019t really seen in.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89537\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/manoa-ethnomath-group-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people preparing to gather algae\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/manoa-ethnomath-group-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/manoa-ethnomath-group-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/manoa-ethnomath-group.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ethnomathematics participants gather algae around Coconut Island.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For more than a decade, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> had been developing dynamic mathematics educators through ethnomathematics training, which provides hands-on experiences such as sailing aboard the the Polynesian Voyaging Society\u2019s double-hulled canoes Hikianalia and <span aria-label=\"HokUlea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span> and traveling to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology on Moku o <span aria-label=\"Loe\">Lo&#699;e<\/span>, also known as Coconut Island, in <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K&#257;ne&#699;ohe<\/span> Bay to study snapping shrimp and other creatures in the algae participants collect.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/ethnomathematics\/\">Read more about <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s ethnomathematics program.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ethnomathematics is a way to prepare high-quality primary and secondary teachers as leaders through real-world application of teaching and learning mathematics that bridges indigenous wisdom and 21st century skills to classrooms and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Vallejo-San Agustin says, &ldquo;Ethnomathematics is just the way we should be teaching mathematics. By using culture, by going into our physical environments and just by doing instead of just listening and lecturing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Being first in the world means <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is leading the way for math education. Ferdinando Arzarello, former president of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction says, &ldquo;[<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s] program is very important because it\u2019s opening new ways for research in math education, for research in science, for research that is looked at from a fresher standpoint.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> biology Instructor <strong>Michelle Phillips<\/strong> says she\u2019s seen ethnomathematics change students. &ldquo;It\u2019s made a huge difference.
