  {"id":89387,"date":"2019-01-09T16:58:20","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T02:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=89387"},"modified":"2019-01-09T16:58:20","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T02:58:20","slug":"maunakea-scholars-dual-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/01\/09\/maunakea-scholars-dual-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"M\u0101noa Academy teams up with Maunakea Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_89400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89400\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/system-maunakea-scholars.jpg\" alt=\"students looking at computer sitting a a table\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-89400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/system-maunakea-scholars.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/system-maunakea-scholars-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island Maunakea Scholars from Wai&#257;kea and <span aria-label=\"Honokaa\">Honoka&#699;a<\/span> High Schools have the opportunity to earn dual credit at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> this semester.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A first-of-its-kind partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/maunakeascholars.com\">Maunakea Scholars program<\/a> and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/manoa-academy\/manoa-academy-in-the-high-school.html\">M&#257;noa Academy<\/a> is providing high school students with real-life <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> learning experiences beyond the classroom with the most scientifically productive telescopes in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Pairing collegiate-level learning with research opportunities for high school students, this partnership creates dual-credit pathways from high school to college for students.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership will provide students at two <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island public high schools with an opportunity to earn college credit in an entry-level astronomy class.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are thrilled to partner with Maunakea Scholars and have enjoyed the process of developing an online pilot to serve students at Wai&#257;kea and <span aria-label=\"Honokaa\">Honoka&#699;a<\/span> High Schools,&rdquo; said <strong>Wendi Vincent<\/strong>, M\u0101noa Academy director. &ldquo;We look forward to expanding this pilot in future semesters and advancing academy offerings statewide.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The pilot program launched in the spring 2019 semester.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our mission is to prepare <span aria-label=\"Hawaii's\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> youth for their future beyond graduation by offering authentic learning opportunities,&rdquo; said Mary Beth Laychak, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfht.hawaii.edu\/\">Canada-France-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Telescope<\/a> outreach program manager. &ldquo;We\u2019re cultivating student scientists who will become the next generation of local engineers, technicians and astronomers who will operate and perform research with the Maunakea Observatories in the years to come.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Maunakea Scholars program is a partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/a>,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/mko\/\">Maunakea Observatories<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education<\/a>. The program allows chosen high school students observation work time with the telescopes that astronomers from around the world covet.<\/p>\n<p>M\u0101noa Academy, which is administered through the <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>, allows eligible high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college-level courses and earn both college and high school credits simultaneously.
