From sustainable solutions to culinary competition, early college excellence to vital support during the K\u012blauea eruption, here are some of this year\u2019s top stories on UH<\/abbr> News<\/em>. \"Aukai<\/p>\n

New law expands Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise scholarships for UH<\/abbr> Community College students<\/strong><\/a>
\nMore students will get financial need-based aid because of legislation signed in June 2018. The new law adds $700,000 for \u201clast-dollar\u201d scholarships at seven UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges statewide for the upcoming school year.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> Hilo playing vital role in response to historic eruption<\/strong><\/a>
\nUH<\/abbr> Hilo professors, scientists and students are provided valuable expertise and resources on multiple fronts, helping government officials assess the hazards to the public and its personnel, and decide where and how to respond.<\/p>\n

\"Hendricks <\/p>\n

Record number of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> high school students earn college degrees from UH<\/abbr><\/strong><\/a>

UH<\/abbr> student chefs battle in statewide culinary competition<\/strong><\/a>
\nThe UH<\/abbr> teams from Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, Kauaʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr> Hilo and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr>–P\u0101lamanui created a dish using Kauaʻi<\/span> shrimp that pairs perfectly with a Stella Artois beer.<\/p>\n

\"Aerial<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> Maui College aims to be first net-zero UH<\/abbr> campus<\/strong><\/a>
\nUH<\/abbr> Maui College will soon be among the first in the nation to generate 100 percent of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic systems coupled with battery storage.<\/p>\n

First dual-credit Kapiʻolani<\/span> graduate delivers commencement address in American Sign Language<\/strong><\/a>

Longtime Big Island construction mentor recognized for distinguished service<\/strong><\/a>
\nÂ鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr> Professor Gene Harada was recognized with the UH<\/abbr> Willard Wilson Award for Distinguished Service. Harada is the longtime coordinator of the highly popular Model Home Project.<\/p>\n

Better beer and bread: endless culinary possibilities for state\u2019s first culinology student<\/strong><\/a>
\nAlan Martin enhances his culinary skills with science in the UH<\/abbr> culinology program, two years of institutional food service management at Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, followed by two years of food science and human nutrition\u2013culinology from UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> No. 1 in nation for campus growth<\/strong><\/a>
\nEnrollment jumped 239 percent between 2006, when the campus had 866 students, and 2016, when there were 2,939 students.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> collaborates on Hawaiian language version of Disney\u2019s Moana<\/em><\/strong><\/a>
\nThe Moana<\/em> movie project, a collaboration of five programs at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> and Honolulu CC<\/abbr>, was spearheaded by the Academy for Creative Media System and was recorded at the sound studio of Honolulu CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Music and Entertainment Learning Experience program.<\/p>\n

Full-sized albizia house a model of innovation and sustainability at UH<\/abbr><\/strong><\/a>
\nThe prototype was constructed as a single-family low-income shelter made from albizia, reconceptualizing the invasive species as a useful building material.<\/p>\n
