Ten <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward<\/a> Community Colleges and three from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa comprise the <a href=\"http:\/\/imua.wcc.hawaii.edu\/\">Project Imua<\/a> Mission 6 team.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Student Launch is a competition hosted by <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> annually and it\u2019s a prestigious competition where they have teams build a launch vehicle and build a payload specified to each year\u02bbs requirements,&ldquo; explained Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> student and rocket team leader <strong>Katherine Bronston<\/strong>. &ldquo;This year we\u2019re building a 10-foot rocket that will go about a mile, not quite a mile, into the air and then it will land in two independent sections and a rover will come out, intended for soil collection.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Mia Fong<\/strong> leads the payload team that is designing and building the rover. She said, &ldquo;It\u2019s been really interesting to learn all about this process especially because the <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> competition mimics the [real-life] <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> design review, you kind of get to see what it would be like in industry before actually getting there.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As part of their preparation for Mission 6 and to test their rocket\u2019s design, the Project Imua students recently launched small-scale rockets at Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Project Imua started as a collaboration between four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges in 2014 to provide students with real-life aeronautical engineering experiences with <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/project-imua\/\">Read more <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories about Project Imua<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s so that students have a hands-on project-based educational experience and by doing this they learn all the rules that <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> expects from any company that they are going to subcontract to,&rdquo; said Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Instructor <strong>Jacob Hudson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Project Imua team was informed by <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> in October 2018 that they had been selected to compete in the 2019 <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Student Launch.
